Dear Bumbo® Customer,

We are very proud to have you as our Bumbo® customer!

We would like to inform you that all new Bumbo® Baby Seats (Bumbo® Baby Seat single and combo) will have a restraint belt to help prevent children from getting out of or falling from the seat when it is used as intended: on the floor with adult supervision and never on raised surfaces. Initially the boxes will have a kit that includes the restraint belt, easy-to-follow instructions and a new warning sticker. Bumbo® will then be providing product that has the restraint belt already attached.

I am an Australian living in Canada and from the news reports here they have been recalled due to children falling from risen surfaces, the warnings state clearly this is not to be done. My son had a bumbo and had absolutely no problems with it.I think it is ridiculous.

Hi Adriana, Yes I tend to agree with you. I used a Bumbo with Lucy and loved it. We never had any issues at all. Unfortunately though it seems that common sense is not so common these days :)

  2. Hi

I’m an Australian living in Japan. I put my son into his Bumbo on the floor, as directed. I was sitting next to him when, without warning, he arched his back as hard as he could, popped his legs out and dived head first backwards toward the floor. Thankfully I caught him and all was well. We never used the Bumbo again, as there was no guarantee we would be able to catch our baby in such a fashion.

While you may have had a good experience with the Bumbo, and the majority of accidents have occurred when used against the manufacturers advice, I believe that further warning should be provided to parents about how babies can fall out of the Bumbo. Its not as simple as ignorant or lazy parenting without common sense.

Hi Paul – that must have been a scary experience for you! Thankfully you were right next to him and your son was on the floor when it happened, as it could have been so much worse if he was on a table or bench! Thank you for letting me know.

There is research coming out now that a bumbo is not good for babies hips as it makes them stay in an un-natural position for the time they are sitting in a bumbo. While they may not spend large amounts of time, for a child who has hip dysplasia or other risks of developing it, it can exacerbate the problem. As a mum whose son has just had to wear a brace from 2-12 months of age to correct hip dysplasia, I would advise thinking very carefully about using a bumbo.
