Happy 2nd Birthday Lucy!! I Wish…

Dear Lucy,

Today you are officially two years old!!

What an amazing time we have had together over the past two years. You blessed me with patience and perspective when you were born, and I have enjoyed being your mother on a much deeper level than I ever thought possible. I trusted myself, and I trusted you – and together we helped you make your own way in this world. I am grateful to have had a final opportunity to follow my instincts when it came to nurturing a brand new baby.

I held you, I sang to you, I snuggled you, I carried you, I rocked you, I nourished you. I did it with love, and I felt it come back to me in more ways than I could count.

And now you are two.

And you are learning that you are not actually a part of me. You like doing things by yourself, and you are fiercely protective of your independence. You pat your little chest and tell me in no uncertain terms that you will do things your way.

Each day you are learning new things. You love to wrap your mouth around new words, and my heart jumps into my mouth when you push your physical capabilities in trying something new for the first time.

I watch you grow, and I am so proud of you.

You are not a part of me.

You are your own beautiful, perfect, clever, brave and strong little person.

You have such a tremendous life in front of you, and I have absolute faith that you will see and do things that I just never thought would be possible. I am excited to stand on the side lines as you discover your world.

My wish to you on your second birthday is for you to have the same perspective that you gave me. I wish you to savour your childhood and embrace your future. Sometimes things will be wonderful, sometimes not so much. But just live every single moment, and be courageous in pursuing happiness. It’s worth it  - it’s ALL worth it.
