Every Christmas I tend to get a little over-excited about decorating the house with beautiful festive colours and special pieces that have been lovingly collected over the years. I think any piece of blank wall (or door frame, or window – actually any bare surface!) is fair game. Last year my decorating frenzy got a little out of hand, which led to some walls actually having to be patched and painted when the decorations came down. Yes sure, it’s HANDY (haha) that hubby is a HANDYMAN (boom-tish), but I don’t think he appreciated coming home from work and having to deal with MORE work because of some “harmless” Christmas decorations.

This year, as I was unloading the Christmas cupboard, he caught me eyeing off all the freshly painted walls. He had that pained expression on his face – the one that said “I know what you’re thinking, and I beg you… BEG YOU… to re-consider”. I almost took pity on him… almost. He knew he was facing a losing battle, so he said “You know what? You can do what you like on one condition. That you ONLY use the 3M stuff!” Out of the mouths of handymen huh?

VOILA!

Smugly I presented him with my little box of goodies, and told him not to worry – I was all sorted this year! The Command Clear Hooks from 3M are absolutely brilliant for hanging Christmas decorations. Not only are they cleverly designed with their clear tape and hook (allowing the decorations to be on show and not the hooks), but they come off cleanly without a single nail hole, or without taking off a chunk of paint when removed.

No matter what you are hanging, there are a range of sizes suitable for different weights – including the Mini, Small and Medium hooks as well as the Utensil and Decorating Clips (priced from RRP $6.99). The first decorations to go up in our home are ALWAYS the Advent Calendars, and the Decorating Clips were the perfect size for this.

Living in Queensland, we have no need for a fireplace so the stockings always have to be hung elsewhere. This year we decided to make a feature wall of the stockings. Again we used the Decorating Clips, as well as the Small Hooks. I LOVE that the focus remains totally on the stockings, and you can’t even see the hooks!

Our beautiful wreath always takes pride of place at our front door. Please notice that it’s not painted yet. That’s what I would like for Christmas – a handyman who finishes his jobs around the house. Are you listening Santa? I have been very good, I promise!

Anyway, there is NO way that hubby would let me put a nail in for the wreath, so I was super sneaky, and put a large hook UPSIDE DOWN at the top of the back of the door (that sounded very confusing but it’s really not!). Then I threaded some silver ribbon through the wreath, tied it together and simply placed it over the door and onto the hook at the back. Easy peasy!!

And even from the back, it is still barely visible. High-5 to me on that one!

There is nothing more precious than all of the beautiful decorations that are made with such love at kindy. These take pride of place in our home, and they can be hung throughout the home – a beautiful reminder of what can be created with little hands.

As the Christmas Cards start arriving in your letterbox, make sure you have a place to put them on display. There are all sorts of ways you can do this, but I think simple is best. Just hang a string between two hooks, and use coloured mini-pegs to display them. The kids love reading and re-reading them so it’s good to have a method which makes it easy to remove and replace the cards.

The Command Clear Hooks work on a range of surfaces, including dark, wooden and unusual surfaces. I used them on my IKEA Expedit to hang my little Advent Stockings.

Of course, we need to make it abundantly clear that Santa is very welcome to stop here, so this bunting was hung in our carport, and the Command Hooks attached easily to the paint and have held on strongly – even in heat and rain! (They are of course under cover.)

The 3M range can be purchased at all leading supermarkets and retail outlets across Australia. You can decorate to your heart’s content with the Command Clear Hooks and feel confident that taking down the decorations won’t cause any headaches OR damage! Comments

  1. Decorate with love and reckless abandon!( damaging walls excluded lol) perfection has its place, but not in family home hands on decorating!

  2. Keep it simple, stylish, fun and child-friendly!

  3. Jessie Hay says:

Don’t overdo it and keep it simple- I think there’s nothing worse than a mess of decorations!

  4. Kimberley Belford says:

Anything handmade – the kids drawings, paintings and cards have so much more meaning than bought decorations

  5. I make sure everything is colour co ordinated by spray painting ornaments in gold.

  6. I decorate with a lot of fairy lights, use strings of twine across windows to hang streamers from, light up all my plants and trees and bring out festive candles to brighten up my place…:)
