Wk 2 12WBT – I Want To Be A Big Loser!!
Feb 24
What do they say – time flies when you’re having fun right? Well I’m not sure I’m so much as having “fun”, but it really does seem to be flying.
Two weeks already have passed on the 12WBT and I have had another interesting week.
What I am finding is that the meals are quite time consuming to prepare. I realise this is a problem for me because as a busy mother (is there any OTHER type of mother), I tend to go for the quick way out when it comes to dinners. We would often eat “fresh” pre-packaged lasagne with a side of salad, bangers and mash, spag bol, tuna mornay, and slow cooked meats. The veges would be thrown on the side – usually by way of a bag of Steamfresh veges that had been nuked for a couple of minutes.
I am now realising that eating well requires LOTS and LOTS of fresh veges (I bought so many veges this week I couldn’t fit them all in the fridge), and cooking from scratch is the secret to a nutritious meal. There’s a lot of chopping up and preparing, but the result of all that hard work is a meal that feels like it’s a world away from our old “normal”. So one of the epiphanies I have had this week is that I am creating the new normal for our family.
It will be NORMAL for us to have a trolley full of fruit and veg every week. It will be NORMAL to cook dinners from scratch. It will be NORMAL to try new recipes, and give them a taste even if I am not overly confident that I will like it. This is about changing habits and old habits die hard. It means being more prepared around meal times, learning to cook double batches for extra meals, and probably ramping up my knife skills a bit!
At my personal training session this week we did some BOXING!!! Man, if you want to feel like a Warrior Queen – pop on some boxing gloves!! Now this particular workout was a cardio session rather than a power session, so it was often lots of very quick and intense punches over 30 second intervals. But what a perfect way to let go of all the aggro, all the worries, all the stress. Every single punch made me feel fitter, stronger and more powerful. I think I have found my calling – I think I belong in the ring!! OK maybe not – I’d probably crumble in the foetal position if anyone came at me, but I do think the mouthguard looks kinda fun!
I did have one sneaky cheat this week. I went to dinner with some of my dearest friends and made a great choice for dinner – seafood in a tomato broth, but the Fate Gods were working overtime and delivered on the menu my favourite dessert of all time – Vanilla Bean Panacotta *drool*. What’s more it was a “Mini” and came served in a shot glass, so how could I resist??? Considering we had just spent an hour kayaking up the Brisbane River (as you do), I figured I had earned enough calories for this one little treat. And it was GOOOOODDD! The kind of good I’ll be thinking about for weeks! So it was worth it!
Second weigh-in wasn’t earth shattering. I achieved a loss of 1.4kg. Yes it’s a loss but I want a LOSS – a Biggest Loser style loss – you know 10.8kg in a week!! That kinda thing! Talking about skewing our reality! My loss was pretty much spot on for what it should be, but I guess I can’t help being a little disappointed after my great start last week. So all in all that’s now a total of 3.7kg.
Little by little I am sneaking up on my goal. But more than that I am learning my new normal – and that is what is going to make this a real lifestyle change, and not just a fad diet.
The headaches have gone, the fuzz has gone. I feel inspired. I want to lose more. And I want to put on some boxing gloves again!!

I’m loving the recipes but I get what you’re saying about time consuming. What I’ve started to do is repeat days and precook things like chicken to go in salads in batches and then they’re in the portion sizes ready to go. I’ve also got the new tupperware thingos that you can chop up your lettuce and salad and they keep for longer. They stack on top of each other in the fridge. Can’t remember what they’re call but this helps too, as long as i remember to chop it up ;P Still haven’t perfected a system but will get there in the end.
Great tips Trina – I am going to try the pre-chop and pre-cook this week. The portions are so small that it would be easy to do double batches. I love your Tupperware idea – I’ll have to look that up! I am just using the Fridge Smarts at the moment.
I know what you mean with the veggies – I have to play ‘veggie tetris” in my crisper to fit it all in! the boxing sounds like SO much fun – the only reason i would join a gym for the 12wbt would be for the classes, I used to do some and I miss it. 1.4K is HUGE, well done!
ROFL at veggie tetris!! Thanks so much Skyelee
the 10 kilos a week thing is why I stopped watching Biggest Loser and their ilk. Cause it made me feel inadequate and then I would binge eat because weight loss talk makes me act like a spoilt child.
Good luck and I will be on the sidelines cheering you on and secretly wishing I had joined in.
Kelley you have no idea how much I appreciate this comment. I actually read it while I was out to dinner and I just happened to be gazing hungrily at the dessert board. I then had a lightbulb moment – YOU! Thank you for giving me strength when I really needed it!
that is an awesome loss, be proud. I’m on a weight loss journey and I’ve been losing 1/2 kilo each week. 1.4kg rocks.
Awesome Mandy – congratulations!!! You are most certainly on your way – I am certain you must be feeling incredible!
