I have spent the last few weeks thinking about all the ways that we spend our money. I’ve realised that I have had a terrible habit of wasting money on things that just aren’t necessary, or I really can do without. So I cut our spending to nothing but the bare essentials. It’s been a really great experience for me because it has helped me to see just how much we can save by being careful with our spending.

One of the biggest lessons for me was that I don’t have to buy everything on an impulse. I have learned that if I want something now, and it’s really worth having, then I will still want it in a few weeks or months. By changing this mindset, I have reduced my impulse buys, and have started to focus on setting up a savings plan to “earn” the things that I really want.

Often as Mums we are so focused on ensuring that everyone else has their wants and needs met, that we find ourselves at the bottom of the list of priorities. So I have decided that doing little things “just for me” is really important in making me feel great and normal, even if they are only every so often.

One of my favourite things to do is to visit my hairdresser. It’s not unusual for me to have absolutely no idea about what sort of colour or cut I want – it’s just the thought of sitting down for a couple of hours while someone pampers me that really appeals. Two weeks ago before I went to my hairdresser, I looked like this…

After consulting with my Facebook community (as we mothers often do!), I decided it was time to “lighten up” and get my hair ready for Summer! A few foils, and lots of snips later, I looked like this….

Do you find it hard to justify spending money on little luxuries, or would it be helpful to be able to draw on some savings for a rainy day? The Virgin Saver account is a fantastic product which will encourage you to put away little bits at a time, by offering no limits on deposits and absolutely no fees whatsoever. And unlike other banks which start out with high honeymoon introductory rates which then drop to almost nothing, the Virgin Saver currently offers a 4.50% ongoing variable rate – so the longer you save for, the more an ongoing rate will benefit you.

It’s easy to set up – just 5 minutes to complete the online application, and all you need is to link an Australian Transactional Account  so that you can start saving right away!

Virgin Money want to help you save for a rainy day. They would love to offer all my Australian readers a chance to win 25 Virgin Money Saver accounts, each one credited with $25, and one grand prize of a $100 credited account to help Mums start saving for their own rainy day!!! Imagine what you could do with that!

Just follow the Rafflecopter below, and tell me what rainy day activity you would like to start saving for.
